Website or Google Business Profile — Which Do I Need First?

0:00 / 1:39

If you can only do one right now, set up a free Google Business Profile. It takes minutes and puts you on Maps and in local search immediately.

A website should follow soon after. It is the only one of the two you fully own, and it does things a profile simply cannot.

Why start with the profile?

For a shop, restaurant, clinic or service provider it is free, takes minutes, and puts you in Maps and in "near me" searches straight away. There is no reason not to have one, whatever else you build.

Why isn't it enough on its own?

A profile is a listing, not a presence. It cannot tell your full story, cannot be customised beyond Google's format, and does not appear when someone asks an AI assistant to recommend a business like yours. It also carries real platform risk: listings can be restricted or suspended for reasons outside your control.

What does a website add?

A permanent, fully owned home for your business: as detailed as you want, readable by AI search tools, and not dependent on one platform's rules. It is also where the profile's own "Visit website" button sends people.

What's the ideal setup?

Both, connected. The profile gets you discovered locally; the website gives people the full picture once they click through. Neither replaces the other — they serve different moments in the same search.

Questions, answered.

If I have a profile, do I really need a website?

For basic local discovery a profile alone can work at first. As you grow, or want visibility in general and AI search, a website becomes necessary.

Should I link my website from the profile?

Yes. It is one of the most valuable things on the listing for anyone doing more research.

Does a profile help with AI search like ChatGPT?

Not directly. AI tools mostly pull from indexable websites rather than Google's listings.

Is relying only on a profile risky?

Somewhat. Profiles can be suspended or restricted, and you have limited recourse.
