Do I Need a Website If I Already Have Instagram and WhatsApp Business?
0:00 / 4:51
Yes, for most businesses. Instagram and WhatsApp Business are excellent for talking to people who already know you. A website is what lets people who don't know you yet find you, check you out and trust you, on Google, on Maps and inside AI answers.
The two do different jobs. Keep your Instagram and WhatsApp; add a website so they have somewhere to point.
What do Instagram and WhatsApp Business actually do well?
Instagram is a showroom. It is visual, it is where your regulars already spend time, and a good reel can reach people who follow someone who follows you. For food, fashion, décor, salons and anything that photographs well, it is hard to beat.
WhatsApp Business is a counter. Customers message you the way they message family, you can set a catalogue, quick replies and business hours, and an order can be confirmed in a few lines. Both are free to start, and both are worth keeping.
Where do they fall short?
Both platforms are built to keep people inside the app. That is good for conversation and weak for discovery. Someone who has never heard of you, searching Google for a service in your area, is shown very little of an Instagram profile and nothing at all of a WhatsApp chat.

What happens when a customer searches for you on Google?
Most first visits start with a search: "bakery near me", "CA in Ludhiana", or your name after someone mentions you. Search engines and AI assistants answer that by reading pages on the open web. A website gives them a page about you to read: what you do, where you are, your hours and prices, in words they can quote.
Without one, the answer is assembled from whatever else exists, such as a directory listing, an old review or a competitor who did build a page.
What about Google Business Profile?
Set one up. It is free, it puts you on Google Maps and in the local results panel, and it is the single best thing a local business can do in an afternoon.
It is not a replacement for a website, though. The profile has a fixed format and a short description, and it has a field asking for your website. Google treats a profile that links to a real site with matching name, address and phone as more complete. The two work best together.
Does this apply to service businesses too?
Even more so. A clinic, a tutor, an accountant or an interior designer is not chosen from a photo. People want to know qualifications, what a first visit involves, rough prices and how to book, and they want to read it before they message.
Instagram has no good place for that information, and a WhatsApp chat means the customer has to ask. A short website answers the questions up front, so the people who do message you are already closer to deciding.
What if my account gets restricted or hacked?
Your followers and chat history live on someone else's platform. Accounts are suspended by automated checks, numbers get banned for sending too many messages, and profiles are taken over. When that happens, recovery is on the platform's timeline, not yours.
A website on a domain you own is the one address that stays put. Print it on your bill book and visiting card, and customers can always find the current way to reach you, whatever happens to an app.
What's the cheapest way to close this gap?
Start small and in this order:
- Claim your free Google Business Profile.
- Get a simple site with your services, location, contact details and links to Instagram and WhatsApp.
- Put the website address on your profile, bio, packaging and bills.
At Phantom Labs, the Starter plan covers that site for ₹12,000, and keeping it online with domain, hosting and SSL is ₹1,500 a quarter. That comes to ₹18,000 for the first year.
So, do you need one?
If every customer you will ever have already follows you, perhaps not. If you want people who have never heard of you to find you on Google, on Maps or through an AI assistant, and to trust you enough to message, then yes. Keep the apps for conversation, and let the website do the introducing.
Questions, answered.
Can my Instagram profile rank on Google instead of a website?
Sometimes for your exact business name, rarely for searches like "bakery near me". You also cannot control what Google shows from the profile.
Is a WhatsApp Business catalogue enough to sell online?
It works for people who already have your number. It cannot be found by search, so it does not bring new customers on its own.
Do I still need Instagram if I have a website?
Yes, if your customers are there. The website brings people in; Instagram and WhatsApp keep the conversation going.
How many pages does a small business website need?
Three or four is enough to start: what you do, where you are, how to contact you and links to your social profiles.
How long does it take to build?
A simple site is typically ready in two to three weeks, depending on how quickly the content and photos are ready.
